Born the eldest of 2 girls from a non-horsey background, my love of horses was apparent from a very early age. Riding lessons at the local riding school started aged 6 & by the time I was 11 or 12, I was cycling 8 miles every Saturday morning to go & help muck out, groom, tack up & help out at a Riding School in vague hope of a free ride. They didn’t come often but it didn’t matter! Just being around the ponies was enough! I had my first horse on loan aged 16 having begged & borrowed until that point & it was only after I’d completed a year at Secretarial college did my parents give in & allow me to go & study for my BHSAI.
On returning home with my BHSAI & my ABRS Assistant Grooms Diploma, I worked with a variety of horses, on a racing yard, then with Eventers, Hunters & Dressage horses. I built up from scratch my own Riding school after this with a couple of ponies & for 3 ½ years I taught from home, mainly beginners, some children defected from the Riding School where I’d once helped & then the occasional parent too. I soon outgrew the premises & with the ever-growing problems of insurance & red tape, I decided it was no longer viable to be able to afford to offer the quality of tuition I wanted, so I closed the school.
It was several years & several ‘normal’ jobs later, both before & after the birth of my son & the loss of childcare that I decided to start teaching again, mainly so I could work around him. I never expected to be quite so in demand!! My business has gone from a few occasional private clients, to regulars, a lot of Pony Club teaching, both camps & rallies, & now a very healthy diary that takes a bit of juggling to fit it all in!! It’s also given me the confidence to continue with my exams & further my Coaching education to hopefully become BE Accredited & hold my UKCC Level 3. I passed my BHS Stage IV last year to give me my Intermediate Stable Managers qualification & my Intermediate Teaching is next on the list! Nothing gives me more pleasure than watching a client & a horse progress. I have some clients that are going on to represent Pony Club teams at National Championships AND getting placed which fills me with huge pride. I love getting text messages after events telling me what’s happened – good & sometimes not so good – but that’s horses. I love not knowing what challenge the horse is going to set me today & it’s all these little things that give me the buzz I get from my work!
